Short guides

Written by our team for parents, students and adults.

For parentsSigns your child may need a learning assessment

Every child has off days. It's worth a closer look when several of these keep happening for months:

  • Reading is slow and effortful, or words are guessed from the first letter
  • Spelling is very inconsistent, even for familiar words
  • Handwriting is hard to read, or writing tasks cause distress
  • Maths facts don't stick despite lots of practice
  • Your child understands well when you read aloud, but struggles alone

None of these mean something is wrong. They mean it's worth understanding how your child learns.

For studentsA five-minute reset for exam stress
  1. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, breathe out for 6. Repeat five times.
  2. Name 5 things you can see and 4 things you can hear.
  3. Write down the one topic you'll do next. Just one.
  4. Set a 25-minute timer and start with the easiest part of it.

Stress shrinks when the next step is small and clear. If it doesn't ease over a few weeks, talk to someone.

For parentsTalking to your child after a hard day at school

"How was school?" usually gets "fine". These open the door wider:

  • "What was the best and the hardest part of today?"
  • "Was there a moment you felt stuck?"
  • "Who did you sit with at lunch?"

Listen more than you advise, and reflect back what you heard: "That sounds really frustrating."

For adultsBuilding a calmer evening routine
  • Set a screens-off time 45 minutes before bed
  • Write tomorrow's top three tasks so your mind can let go
  • Take 5 minutes of slow breathing or a short walk
  • Keep the same wake-up time, even on weekends

If sleep or mood stays low for more than two weeks, it's a good time to speak with a professional.
